Ramen for Breakfast

because nothing makes sense in Japan

July 10, 2008

In America, he's Godzilla, but in Japan, he's:
GO-JEE-LA !!!
(this one's for my dad)
When I first moved to Japan, I found this rad site with old b&w photos of the Yokosuka area including a photo of a Godzilla slide on a beach in Kannonzaki. The site mentioned a new Godzilla slide (circa '99) that mimicked the beach slide that had since been demolished circa '73. The last two weeks, Matt and I have spent bopping around the area checking out the things that were on our to-do list, albeit in the "if I ever run out of daytrips" section. We finally made the hike to Kurihama Flower World. Screw the herb garden, the poppies, the gorgeous views of the bay--we were here to see Godzilla in his new home--and marvel at the architectural splendor!!! (Adrienne: he looks just like that little toy we had that blew sprarks from his mouth!!!)

And why did we miss this on our visit? Hmmmm?

I especially like the juxtaposition of the little kid at the base of the stairs. I'd die for a high resolution copy of this photo.

With a purposeful grimace and a terrible sound
He pulls the spitting high tension wires down

Helpless people on a subway train
Scream bug-eyed as he looks in on them
